An earlier post gives insight into the ACT exam as a whole. Let’s look at the Essay writing section in this post. Essay writing is an optional section that is required for some schools while applying for admission. Check if the school you want to apply requires an essay writing score and decide if you want to go ahead for the essay writing section of the ACT.
Essay Section Overview
Essay section has one prompt that is given along with three perspectives. You are supposed to write an essay in 40 minutes. This is a paper-and-pencil test. You are supposed to write the essay in pencil. Mechanical pencils, Ink pens are not allowed for this section. An answer folder is given to you in which you are expected to write the essay.
The essay section complements the English and Reading sections. With the scores of all three, a school can gauge a student’s understanding of written English language and the ability to produce a writing sample. The essay section can be attempted only after all the other 4 sections are attempted. It cannot be taken separately.
Essay writing tests your ability to develop your perspective and evaluate it with one or more of the given perspectives. You can generate your perspective from the given prompts, partially or fully, or create your own. The section tests your ability to develop ideas, add details, organize them into clear and concise blocks of information moving from Introduction to the body to conclusion.
