IGCSE stands for International General Certificate of Secondary Education. Nearly 20 years ago, the IGCSE curriculum by Cambridge commenced and now, it has become one of the most recognized programmes. Any students who choose the IGCSE subject will be acquiring the qualification recognized worldwide.

Age Group

The IGCSE curriculum is ideal for students in the age group 14 to 16 years old.

Qualification

The Cambridge IGCSE assessment is taken at the end of the course. It contains written, oral, coursework, and practical assessment. This opens the opportunities for students to demonstrate their learning especially when their 1st language is not English.

There are a lot of subjects to choose from. Grades are set with the use of internationally recognized grades A* to G. There have been proper guidelines explaining the standard of achievement of all the grades.

The exams for the same occur 2 times/year in June and November respectively. The results are out in August and January respectively. Past papers with mark schemes for all the subjects are easily available.

Subject Groups

Students need to take a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 14 subjects.

Group 1: Languages (1st Language, 2nd Language, Foreign Language, etc)

Group 2: Humanities and Social Sciences (English Literature, Geography, History, etc)

Group 3: Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc)

Group 4: Mathematics (Mathematics, Additional Mathematics, etc)

Group 5: Creative, Technical & Vocational (Accounting, Business Studies, Computer Studies, Music, etc)

Extended Curriculum

IGCSE takes into consideration that each student learns at a different pace. Thus, most papers have the option to follow an extended curriculum. For students who are more academically advanced can select the extended curriculum and take a supplement paper along with the core. This will help the students become more academically advanced and professionally trained. The core subjects only give an overview of the subjects and are followed by students who can get a grade from C to G. Anyways, students who have the capability of getting a grade of A to E to study the extra topics and follow the extended curriculum which is graded from A* to E. Students who fail to get grade G for the core curriculum or grade E for the extended curriculum are not graded (grade U).

IGCSE has a high academic standard with a practical approach to learning. The extended curriculum provides an in-depth knowledge of a subject which is very advantageous in the long run.

While there are several certifications that a student can select from at the secondary level, the IGCSE curriculum has a multicultural outlook and this is the reason why it’s good for students.
