What is an AP Physics 2 Course

AP Physics 2 is an introductory college-level physics online course based on algebra. Fluids, thermodynamics, electrical force, field, and potential; electric circuits; magnetism and electromagnetic induction; geometric and physical optics; and quantum, atomic, and nuclear physics are among the topics that students investigate through inquiry-based studies.

Prerequisites

Students should have completed AP Physics 1 or a comparable beginning physics course, as well as pre-calculus or an equivalent course, or be studying it concurrently.

Course Content

Unit 1: Fluids: Pressure and Forces

You’ll study about fluid properties and how the internal structure and interactions of a fluid define these properties.

Unit 2: Thermodynamics

Heat, temperature, and thermal energy will be studied in the context of heat engines, heat pumps, and refrigerators.

Unit 3: Electric Force, Field, and Potential

You’ll start learning about electromagnetism by learning about basic concepts like electric charge and electric forces.

Unit 4: Electric Circuits

You’ll keep studying charged particle behaviour to understand circuit components and the path that an electric current takes.

Unit 5: Magnetism and Electromagnetic Induction

You’ll use what you’ve learned about electrostatic forces and fields to investigate the connections between moving electric charges (currents) and the magnetic forces and fields they produce.

Unit 6: Geometric and Physical Optics

You’ll learn about many approaches to thinking about and modelling electromagnetic waves, or light.

Unit 7: Quantum, Atomic, and Nuclear Physics

You’ll learn about current physics principles and how these new models can resolve disputes and issues that Newtonian physics couldn’t handle.

Exam Pattern

Section 1: Multiple Choice

This portion will consist of 50 questions and will last 1 Hour 30 minutes, accounting for 50 percent of the overall score.

There are multiple-choice questions in this area, including:

  • Individual, single questions
  • Sets of questions around the same diagram or data presentation
  • Multiple-choice questions (2 options are correct)

You may be asked questions that assess your ability to:

  • Interpret and describe models and representations.
  • To answer science problems, use maths.
  • Create an experiment to test a theory or solve a scientific topic.
  • Analyze the data and make a decision based on the facts.
  • Work with scientific hypotheses and explanations.
  • Make the connection.

Section 2: Free Response

This portion will consist of 4 questions and will last 1 hour 30 minutes, accounting for 50 percent of the overall score.

Credit for answers in the free-response part is based on the quality of the solutions and explanations displayed, so be careful to show your work.

These sorts of questions can be found in this section:

  • Experimental Design (1 question): deals with planning and summarising a study, as well as analysing lab data and making observations in order to find patterns or explain occurrences.
  • Qualitative/Quantitative Translation (1 question):  asks you to explain an explanation or reasoning statistically (using figures, equations, graphs, etc.) and qualitatively (using words, phrases, etc). (in words)
  • Short Answer (2 questions, 1 requiring a paragraph-length argument)

You may be asked questions that assess your ability to:

  • Interpret and describe models and representations.
  • To answer science problems, use maths.
  • Create an experiment to test a theory or solve a scientific topic.
  • Analyze the data and make a decision based on the facts.
