The International Baccalaureate (IB) course module contains a total of six subject groups. The fifth group is mathematics, which is made up of different math courses which are four in number. In order to earn an IB diploma, it is crucial that a person passes at least one of the following three math courses: Mathematical Studies Standard Level, Mathematics Standard Level, or Mathematics Higher Level. Further Mathematics Higher Level is the fourth course which is not extremely essential.

The Mathematical Studies Standard Level is designed in such a manner that it acts as a confidence boost in students and motivates them to develop a liking for math. It is mostly for students who appreciate math playing a minor role in their studies. The course module includes numbers along with algebra, geometry accompanied by trigonometry, statistics with financial math, along with other topics.

On the contrary Mathematics Standard Level, is made out for students who are mainly preparing for a university study in either chemistry or economics. At Mathematical Studies Standard Level, students will be studying algebra, trigonometry, and statistics. While there are a few other areas of study which form the core curriculum. It is the same for Mathematics Standard and Higher Level with the Standard Level curriculum being a subdivision of the Higher Level curriculum.

Mathematics Higher Level is only for those students who are holding a good amount of knowledge in Math. They also need to have in hand experience in technical skills along with a range of analytics. Similar to the Mathematics Standard Level Students, are most often preparing for future studies in relation to physics, engineering, and technology. Mathematics Higher Level requires a minimum of 190 instructional hours. Also, students are required to study at least one optional topic (called “options”) for a minimum of 40 additional instructional hours.

The Further Mathematics Higher Level course (Standard Level before 2014) is designed for students who are both competent and interested in math and more specifically, for those who intend to continue studying math while at university.
