What are AS and A Levels?
AS (Advanced Subsidiary) and A (Advanced) level qualifications normally take 2 complete years full-time in school, although one can also opt to study part-time.
It is divided into two parts, with one part studied each year. The 1st part is known as the AS level(Advanced Subsidiary level) and the 2nd part as the A2 level. Most of us are aware that the AS Level is a qualification on its own, and the AS Level combined with the A2 Level forms the complete A Level qualification.
Generally, you require at least five GCSEs in grades A*-C. Sometimes, you need a grade B or above at GCSE in a particular subject to take it at AS or A level.
Some schools also ask you to have a GCSE grade of C or above in Maths and English.
There are around 80 AS and A level available subjects. You can carry on with subjects taken in Years 11 and 12 or opt for new ones.
Most students studying for A levels choose three or four AS levels in their 1st year. What this means is that you can keep your options open about which subjects to select as a full A level.
The majority of AS and A2 are now each made up of 2 units – although some subjects still have 3.
You’re generally assessed on a combination of about 70% written exams and about 30% internal assessments. This will vary from subject to subject with some being totally assessed through written exams.
There is an assessment of practical skills in a few subjects such as Science or Art. All A levels must also cover some ‘synoptic assessment’ as a portion of the A2. This means testing your understanding of the entire subject and will generally contribute 20% to the full A level.
What if your exams don't go well?
If you think something didn’t go well with marking your exam, your school can ask for a re-evaluation or recount. If you’re still dissatisfied, your school can appeal to the awarding body, and then finally(if required) to the independent Examinations Appeals Board.
You can also opt to resit individual units (although there are time limits). The awarding body will consider the higher mark from your two attempts.
How long does it take to study AS/A Levels?
AS levels demand 180 guided learning hours which is equivalent to just under half an A-level and, if taken full-time alongside other courses, normally take a year to complete.
A-levels involve 360 guided learning hours and often take two years to finish if taken full-time alongside other courses.
Please note:-Guided learning hours are the directed study time one needs to do AS/A level qualification.
