The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma is a 2-year academic program open for the students of age group 16 to 19 years old. Students that successfully complete the program and its requirements, earn the IB Diploma. The diploma program is an important credential for college applications and other purposes. The IB Diploma program requires students to select courses and pass exams in 6 subject areas. 3 or 4 of these subjects can be opted for by the student at the Higher Level or HL, while the remaining subjects can be taken at the Standard Level or SL.
As more schools are making the switch to the IB, we thought we’d share what makes this program so important, and why it could be the right course of study for you.
Breadth and Depth of Study
IB students need to study courses from 6 different subject groups including Math, Science, Languages, and Humanities. The structure aims to develop breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding.
High Acceptance Rate
Students holding an IB Diploma certificate have relatively higher university and college acceptance rates than the ones who have studied under other boards.
Learning Through Experience
IB students participate in Activity, Creativity, and Service. The aim is to allow students to learn through experience and take action in the service of others. Students can pursue what they wish to and their skills through projects, clubs, community service, sports, and other co-curricular activities. It helps to shape students into confident, motivated, and engaged individuals.
Liberal Minded
Students of the IB Diploma Program understand and respect different cultures and are open to the perceptions, values, and traditions of other people. Students will seek and assess a variety of perceptions, and grow with the experience that they get along the way.
Freedom
IB students are motivated to make connections between everything they learn and to follow their own instincts. Links can be made between something taught in the science classroom and something that happens out on the sports field. After that, this link can be made into a personal project of study, such as for The Extended Essay. Students are given the freedom to look for their interests and inspirations.
Risk Takers
Students taking IB Diploma Program are trained not to fear approaching uncertainties. They are also trained to be independent, develop new strategies, and ideas, and be expressive enough to be able to defend their beliefs.
Research Skills
The two other elements of the IB Diploma Program are The Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge component. These components require students to gain advanced independent research and organizational skills – important for any student wishing to pursue higher learning or success in their future careers.
Independent Thinking
The IB classroom involves discussion and 2-way communication between the teacher and students. Every member of the class is motivated to speak up and voice their opinions. This teaching style produces students capable of real thought, who are confident in their perspectives, and who wish to listen and be informed by others.
Global Citizenship
The IB Diploma Program is recognized globally. It’s provided by around 150 countries and recognized by colleges and universities from almost 90 countries. This includes some prestigious US universities like Harvard, Yale, and Stanford. The IB curriculum also trains students to be outward-facing and culturally aware, so they are prepared well enough as global citizens.
Challenging
It is rigorous, stimulating, and inspiring, and provides students an opportunity to excel and see what they’re capable of. For those who want to challenge themselves, the IB is hugely rewarding. Students gain skills and a level of confidence that will help them move forward their whole life through.
IB Diploma Program opens up a door of opportunities for students, and with the above-mentioned merits, it is clear that the program is much better than others.
